Sakwa Canneries & Exports (Pvt) Ltd was established in 2004 in Baddegama, Galle, and formally incorporated in 2017. From the start, the company has been dedicated to satisfying customer needs through advanced technology, a skilled workforce, and eco-friendly manufacturing methodologies.
The factory has the capacity to produce around 20 metric tons per day, manufacturing products using high-quality local ingredients while maintaining strict production standards building a strong reputation in the market under the brand name SAKWA.

Our documented process flow from receiving of fish, salt, cans and packing material through thermal processing to inspection and dispatch.
Fish Receiving & Inspection
Fresh fish is received, inspected against strict sensory and temperature criteria, and moved to cold storage.
Thawing & Cleaning
Fish is thawed under controlled conditions and thoroughly cleaned before entering the production line.
Can Filling & Exhausting
Cleaned fish is filled into inspected empty cans, exhausted and combined with prepared brine.
Seaming
Cans are hermetically seamed to precise specifications for seam length, thickness and hook dimensions.
Thermal Processing (CCP)
Cans undergo controlled thermal processing a designated Critical Control Point followed by cooling.
Quarantine, Labeling & Dispatch
Cans are quarantined, inspected, labeled and packed into corrugated boxes for inspection and dispatch.
Receive → Thaw & Clean → Fill & Exhaust → Seam → Process → Label & Dispatch
It is built into the process from raw fish receiving and inspection through thermal processing, seaming and packaging, in line with SLS 591:2014.
Safety-led operations
Canned mackerel, scads and jack mackerel are manufactured to SLS 591:2014, with a 2-year shelf life at ambient temperature and documented allergenic risk disclosure.
Thermal processing is managed as a Critical Control Point (CCP 1), with strict receiving temperatures for raw fish (below 4°C for scads/jack mackerel, below -18°C for mackerel).
Raw fish is tested for histamine content (under 50 mg/kg) and Total Plate Count (under 10⁵ per gram) before entering production.
Every process stage from receiving of fish, salt, cans and packing material to final dispatch is diagrammed and verified by the Quality Assurance Manager and General Manager.
Products are manufactured to SLS 591:2014 specifications for canned fish intended for human consumption, with a documented allergenic risk disclosure for sensitive individuals.
